Browsing through Kickstarter projects is a great way to learn about new ideas and trends related to cycling around the world.

Here’s a round-up of some of the interesting projects currently looking for funding:

Bamboo Bicycles Beijing (20 days left)

Aims to open a bamboo bicycle workshop to teach Beijing residents how to build their own bamboo bicycle in order to promote cycling as an alternative form of transportation. Really interesting concept of using natural materials, traditional bamboo craftsmanship and recycled bike parts to connect with the community.

Fietsklik  (15 days left)

A click-on system that makes it possible to attach a large crate and a variety of large bags to the back of a bike to make shopping convenient. They also have a prototype child seat that attaches the same way.

Commuter X4 (21 days left)

A wearable rear bike light that helps drivers see you and better judge your distance, width and speed. I think all cyclists should be lit up as much as possible at night, because they’re otherwise essentially invisible to cars, and this looks like a great product for visibility. I’d still combine it with more lights attached to the bike though!

Bike Share Pack (25 hours left)Though it doesn’t look like they’ll reach their goal, I like this project because it aims to create a product for public bike share bikes (such as our local Vel’oh! system). As bike share systems help to encourage cycling by everyone, products that can make them even more convenient and useful are a great idea.

Cyclehack Scotland (23 days left)

This is an excellent idea and something we could do here in Luxembourg! It’s a 48-hour event that brings together “designers, developers, drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, planners and makers to problem solve barriers to cycling from everyone’s perspective”. The goal isn’t to come up with a big infrastructure plan but instead to brainstorm lots of little ‘hacks’, or solutions that will make cycling in Scottish cities better.
